Synopsis :

Poor Piko practised, practised and practised, but he just couldn’t get it right. His playing was always off. So the little blue flute decided to leave the forest, his family and his friends and set off on a voyage to learn more about music

Benshi's review :

Thanks to Piccolo Concerto, preschoolers can discover instruments and colours along with Piko, a little blue flute who himself is on a mission to learn. He lives in Wood Forest – along with a big family of woodwind instruments including flutes, clarinets, bassoons and saxophones – where classical music is the order of every day. He heads off to find out about other types of music. When he reaches the city he comes across jazz and is introduced to the cousins of the forest family – namely percussion and brass instruments! This is an adventure without words, as the young flute’s odyssey gives free rein to the notes of the various characters Piko meets. Viewers of this short film quickly understand that colour is linked to music and fantasy. As Piko goes farther on his journey, the shades around him grow more and more vibrant. In Piko’s imaginary world, music is not present only in the sounds and the inhabitants – because the wind turbines look like notes, the stairs resemble music sheets, and the birds and buildings are shaped like instruments. With such an invitation to embark on a flight of fancy, what better way could there be to discover the fourth art?

Additional information :

Following in the footsteps of Piccolo, Saxo et Compagnie Piccolo Concerto takes its inspiration from a French musical tale from 1956 called Piccolo, Saxo et Compagnie ou la Petite Histoire d’un grand orchestra (Piccolo, Saxo and Company or the little story of a big orchestra). The screenplay was written by Jean Broussolle while André Popp composed the music. As in the short film, our heroes from the Kingdom of Music go on a journey to meet other families of instruments. In the course of their travels other friends join them, enriching the music and the adventure.
