One tree, two animals. A squirrel spends the day looking for nuts; when night falls, a bat comes out to chase fireflies. Then, one day, the two solitary creatures end up meeting each other…
Benshi's review :
This film has no dialogue but is full of emotions. It tells the story of two solitary characters who join forces and pool their ingenuity to restore the world’s natural order. The simple structure of a rising day and falling night conceals the reality of a carefully maintained underground system on which the passage of time depends. This short story illustrates both the importance of environmental balance and the beginning of a beautiful friendship between two characters who were never supposed to meet.
The film also includes elements of farce, thanks to a squirrel on an eternal quest for his nut, reminiscent of the hapless and fanciful Scrat from Ice Age. As with Scrat, the squirrel in this film manages to upset the world order in hilarious ways.
The animation, combining cut paper and 2D digital techniques, retains the pencil traces—a choice that will delight preschool children.
