Under the Clouds

Synopsis :

It’s sometimes said that clouds are like big sheep. Well, one little lamb takes that expression to heart - and wants to turn into a cloud.

Benshi's review :

A sheep pen is perched proudly on an island in the middle of the ocean. There, old sheep dwell with a sprightly young lamb who is full of vim. While the whole flock dreams of grazing, the little lamb has something else on his mind: he wants to roam the skies. And when the flock ravages the island in just a few seconds, the little lamb mourns the loss of the flowers. As if echoing his sadness, the sky groans, the clouds darken and a torrential rain slams down on the island. The little lamb is carried into the air, spinning in every direction until he lands again on his island – to cover it again in green, as if by magic. In this very short film the Russian director Vasilisa Tikunova elevates a lamb to the role of defender of nature and admirer of clouds and flowers. With no dialogue the brisk short story distinguishes itself as a delightful little environmental and metaphorical tale. The brassband-style music gives it a traditional dimension, adding to its quaintness. Children will be moved by the visual fun that plays with the similarities of sheep and clouds and they will enjoy sharing the young animal’s ambitions.

Suitable for :

The pacey edit, the imagery transitions and the minimalist and colourful design are all perfectly suited to preschool viewers, so this film can be enjoyed from ages 2 or 3.

Top reasons to watch the film :

  1. The lovely sheep, as big as clouds
  2. The brassband-style music
  3. The simple and effective design
  4. A short environmentally-friendly tale about nature's cycles

Additional information :

Certain clouds look so similar to our woolly friends that you almost wouldn’t be surprised to see them eating grass! In fact, these particular clouds are called “altocumulus floccus”, and they appear in tufts. Or, to extend the comparison, in flocks. They come in large, sparse flakes and seem to have a texture like sheep wool, soft and fluffy.
