Synopsis :

A little crow born with white plumage is jeered and ridiculed by most of the other crows, all of whom are black. He dreams of a paradise island where each of the vast variety of birds in the world could be at home. And how about if this refuge welcomed everyone?

Benshi's review :

Intolerance is a universal and timeless theme. In re-adapting Hans Christian Andersen’s story of The Ugly Duckling (1842) to apply it to the bird community, the Croatian film-maker Miran Miošić brings the tale up to date by adding fresh outlooks. Here it’s not by finding a new family that the child who is different discovers, as an adult, his place in society. When pollution disturbs the environment for all birds, the white crow finds a magnificent place where all his fellow fliers can live. Thus the most marginalised character becomes the hero precisely because, having been shunned, he was driven to go see what was happening elsewhere. This fable condemns intolerance and encourages everyone to accept as a gift whatever makes them different. The story starts with the crows’ dark uniformity and evolves towards a marvellous bounty of different colours that show how beautiful it is to live in a society where difference is regarded as richness. The strength of this short film is that it touches us and transmits its message without using words, thanks to the intelligence of the telling and the clever way the animation plays with colours.

Suitable for :

A film with no words that is suitable for anyone aged 4 or over.

Top reasons to watch the film :

Additional information :

The White Crow is the second short film by Miran Miošić. He started out in the 1990s as an editor of cinema and television films from all over the world. His films for young people gave him a great opportunity to help develop and raise awareness of Croatian cinema. The Ugly Duckling (“Den grimme ælling” in Danish) is a very popular tale written by Hans Christian Andersen in July 1842. The story is partly autobiographical insofar as Andersen, a storyteller, poet and novelist, suffered a lot from a lack of affection during his childhood before being acclaimed when he reached adulthood. This tale has been adapted several times, firstly by the composer Sergueï Prokoviev in 1914, then Disney made a black and white version for cinema in 1931 before making a colour one in 1939. In 2010 the famous Russian animated director Garri Bardin made his own version in stop motion.
