Synopsis :

Little Tom is discovering the world around him and tasting everything… much to the dismay of his mum, who’s waging war against germs!

Benshi's review :

This highly colourful and very fresh short film serves us up an entertaining slice of everyday life in an ordinary family. Tom’s dad is sick so his wife goes with Tom, who’s aged about 4 or 5, to get some medicine, presenting the little boy with a chance to discover the world at his level. He plays with the cat and tries to put it into Dad’s sick bucket; he licks the mirror in the lift; and he samples dog food and all sorts of other stuff; it all proves to be quite an eventful outing for the slightly neurotic mum, who’s waging war on germs and bacteria! It's not easy to keep an eye on everything the youngest member of the family gets up to, especially when his idea of discovering the world means touching and tasting everything he sees. This short film has lots of fun looking at all the somewhat disgusting things that kids can do, the sort of things best captured by one word: “Yuk!” But nothing puts off Tom – even though the results of his sampling are decidedly mixed! But what some people find revolting is not necessarily so for others… The colours in this film are very vibrant and underscore the comical aspect. Everyone in the family has red hair. Their living room is yellow and orange, their bathroom pink and violet and their kitchen green. Using digital animation enabled the film-makers to play with multiple materials. Thus everything in the living room and kitchen is made of fabric, even the characters. When the cat jumps on the floor, the floor folds as if creased. The animation in the kitchen is in the form of mosaics, giving an effect similar to tiles. The variety of materials, combined with vivid colours and captivating music, keeps the tempo high in this mischievous and slightly yucky short film. These eleven minutes of quite disgusting fun guarantee laughs and, ultimately, plenty of sweetness!
